In this week's issue...

Know your number, even if you're not selling

I spent last Friday at the Northeast ETA event... surrounded by Searchers, Operators, and Investors who evaluate companies through a single lens: enterprise value multiples, not just monthly cash flow

One takeaway worth sitting on: business owners should always know what their company is worth on paper, even with zero intention to sell

A valuation or broker’s informal first pass isn't just an exit prep tool… it’s an operational review. Most brokers will run that initial look for free to build their pipeline, and it immediately reveals your real margin profile, where risk is priced in, and what levers move the valuation needle

Here’s why that matters on the cost side: every dollar of recurring operational waste isn't just a lost dollar. At a 5x multiple, cutting $30,000 in bloated processing fees, misclassified payroll, or legacy vendor contracts puts $150,000 back into your company’s equity value!

If you're curious what's lurking in those line items (benefits, waste, processing, or utilities) grab 15 minutes. Happy to give you an objective read on whether there’s an expense angle worth chasing

This week on the podcast… AJ from Happy Nest

If your business runs through towels, sheets, aprons, or uniforms every week, commercial laundry is one of those line items that quietly bleats cash on auto-pilot

In this episode of the podcast, I sat down with AJ from HappyNest… a national next-day laundry pickup and delivery network serving gyms, spas, medical offices, and hospitality operators across 38 states

We dive deep into the math behind linen management, including:

  • The 3-to-6-year contract trap: Why traditional uniform and towel rental contracts lock you into paying for fixed inventory (like 300 towels/week), whether you're at full capacity or on vacation

  • Renting vs. Owning the Math: When it makes sense to buy your own linens and pay per pound for laundry versus when traditional heavy-garment rentals actually win out

  • The hidden costs of "In-House" washing: How wear-and-tear on residential washer/dryers and diverted front-desk labor quietly cost more than outsourcing

  • No-contract, pay-by-weight flexibility: How HappyNest runs on a fully customizable, app-based schedule with live GPS delivery tracking

Onwards and Upwards,

Joe Lapscher
Partner, ERC
